To Sleep: Perchance To Dream

Length: 4:07 minutes (looping)

“ We leave a memory of ourselves in places where we stay, and this memory may enter the present hotel guest’s dreams. In our dream state, all planes of existence become one. The past, present and future are parallel.”

Riley creates a four channel video installation, “To Sleep: Perchance To Dream” exploring the concept of memory past, present and future interplay in quantum physics theories of time .

Dream State presents ten installations by ten artists in ten hotel rooms.
Riley’s installation may be found in room 012 of the Waterfront Hotel.

Upon entering the room, the viewer would notice that in the bathroom door, there is a profile image of a man with his torso wrapped in a towel, as if he has just emerged from the shower. The man would stand as a side profile facing the mirror. In slow motion, he performs mundane morning rituals such as shaving his face, and then fades away to black. He reappears brushing his teeth, only to fade away again. He may dry his hair with a hair dryer and then once more fade away. The loop begins again with the shaving scene. The man represents the dream figure of a previous guest. We leave a memory of ourselves in places where we stay, and this memory may enter the present guest’s dreams. In our dream state, all planes of existence become one. The past, present and future are parallel.
